How to Check If a Site Is Indexed by Google

There are many ways to check if your site is indexed by Google but understand that Google does not index a website but indexes each of your pages individually.

For example, you may have a 20 page site but only 7 pages are indexed.

There are many places online to check if a page in your site is indexed but if you have a large site this can be very time-consuming.

The best and easiest way is to go to the source.

Sign up for Google Webmaster tools.

You can sign up free for the Webmaster tools but you must be the administrator of your site.

Once you sign up, you have to verify you have authorization for your site.

This is a simple and quick process and there are many ways to verify. If you are unable to verify by adding an .html page, you can add a code into the <head> area or even log into your domain host to verify.

After verification has been completed, Google bot will “scan” your site and see which pages (if any) are indexed.

You will also be able to see where you are in the search engine results page results and which keywords Google “sees” on each of your pages.

If your site is not showing that it is indexed, it may be that your site is so new that Google did not know about it and this is the first time they have scanned it.

If your site has been around awhile and you are not doing well in the search engine results pages, take a look at the information Google returned on your site to see how you can optimize it.

Keyword Information

Are the keywords Google “sees” for your website the ones you wanted targeted? If not, take a look at each page and see if you can re-write the pages as they may not be written correctly.

Search Traffic

Look under Search Queries to see what types of searches people are doing and where your site is located in the search engine results pages. The Average Position of your site should be 20 and below. That would put you on the first two pages. Many people only look at the first couple of pages when doing a search for information.

Crawl

Take a look at the Sitemap category. It will show you how many pages have been submitted and how many are actually indexed. If you don’t have a sitemap, there are many places to generate one for free online.

There is much more information you can view in your Webmaster tools area. Use all this free information to your advantage.
