Keyword Research
Keyword research is the process of finding out which keywords people are using to advertise on, in search engine optimization (“seo“) activities, and in their web sites’ content. It encompasses both researching individual web sites (including your competitors), and researching general trends across entire markets. This type of research is one of the most important Internet marketing activities that you can perform. Some people would argue (and I am certainly one of this group) that whether or not you do keyword research is one of the biggest factors that determines whether or not you will make money online.
Whether you have your own product to sell, or if you want to market somebody else’s product using their affiliate program, you will probably want to consider advertising using Google AdWords, Yahoo search marketing, Miva, Enhance, and other search engines. These advertising venues all work on a pay per click basis, which is to say that you are charged for each visitor who clicks on your advert and arrives at your web site. The amount that you are charged for each of these visitors is controlled by an auction-like bidding process, and therefore depends on the amount of competition. Keyword research will allow you to find lots of keywords to advertise on, and most importantly, to find relevant keywords with little competition (which are therefore cheap).
You can also use keyword research when building content sites. If creating site that is monetized using affiliate programs or advertising programs such as Google AdSense, keyword research can help you both increase the number of visitors to your site, and earn more, on average, from each of your visitors.
There are many things that keyword research can with too. These include investigating how competitive a particular market is, investigating your competitors’ adverts and web sites, and even finding our what type of info-products, there potentially is a market for. It is on this basis, that time and money spent on keyword research is time and money wisely spent.
