DIY Electric Car Kit – Convert Your Gasoline Driven Car to Run on Electricity

Many electric car enthusiasts are starting to convert their gasoline driven car to run purely on electricity. Many people appreciate the benefits of an electric vehicle (EV) but are not ready to invest in a new car. Without economy of scale, a brand new EV is still relatively expensive. The second best option is to convert a conventional automobile to use electric power at home. How do you retrofit a car to EV at your home garage? You start by getting a Do It Yourself (DIY) electric car kit.

The main component of a homemade electric vehicle is the electric motor. The motor will be used to replace the internal combustion engine. Since the engine is gone, all its associated components such as gas tank, radiator, exhaust pipe, fuel lines etc are removed as well. The electric motor will be connected directly to the existing transmission unit.

When you purchase a DIY electric car kit, all the major components for the project are already included. Key parts such as metal joining plate, DC electric motor, universal coupler, electric controller, copper cables, gauges etc are included in the package. All these components can be bought at local hardware store. The challenge is to find the right unit to suit your EV power system.

If you are not well versed with automotive maintenance, it may not be a good idea to start your own EV conversion project. In this case, it is better to outsource the work to a professional workshop. You may have to invest some money, but you will save a lot of time and unnecessary headache.
