The Uncared for Elementary: The Lacking Ingredient in Conventional Instruction

The Neglected Fundamental: The Missing Element in Traditional Instruction

Every instruction article proclaims the importance of swing fundamentals. Obviously, a basic knowledge of swing mechanics is essential as a foundation.

But there is a fundamental which is often overlooked in traditional instruction. In order to discover this element, take a moment and consider the answer to the following question.

What is the most important shot in the game?

The most popular answer is the first tee shot. Most golfers feel that a good start bodes well for the balance of the round. The second most common answer was the last shot on the eighteenth hole. While both answers are logical, I would ask you to shift perspective from a specific shot to the shot that has the greatest effect on how you feel.

Since golf is a game of feel and how you feel affects how you swing, we need to discover the one shot that has the strongest emotional effect. This shot is the one immediately following the first poor shot.

Every round of golf is a roller coaster of good shots and poor ones; a poor shot is inevitable. Your ability to quickly dismiss the effects of a poor shot is the single biggest factor in determining your score.

How often has one poor shot led to several more? When you look back on any round, there is always a turning point; a shift in momentum.

Have you heard the axiom that golf is ninety percent mental? Assuming this is true, why is traditional instruction based on the exact opposite methodology? The assumption is that a player must have a high skill level before any mental tools can be effectively applied. This is a huge misconception. The tools for dealing with a poor shot must be developed in tandem with refining swing technique.

This skill will help any golfer in the elusive pursuit of transferring their proficiency on the practice range to the golf course. Your skill level doesn’t suddenly vanish during the ten minute walk from the practice range to the golf course. If you have first tee anxiety, then you are automatically focusing on potential disaster.

The first step in dealing with the emotional fallout of a poor shot is an awareness of the tendency to anticipate poor results.

In the next article, we will look at some options for quickly interrupting negative thoughts. Thanks for reading. Go out, have fun and just hit the damn ball!
