A great way to expand your writing network, and to learn how to sell a movie script, is to take an internship at a production company or an agency. With that being said, your author would like to mention at the outset that if this is something you are interested in doing, you need to move to either Los Angeles or New York – those are the major hubs for this industry on their respective coasts, and you will be unable to find this kind of work outside of those places.
With all that being said, working in a production office, or for an individual producer, is a tremendous learning opportunity in terms of learning how to sell a movie script that, if you play your cards right, could open tons of doors for you. As a writer, you will gain invaluable insight into the process and gain a greater understanding of how to sell a movie script. This is hard information to come by, as it is a side of the industry that most people rarely get to see, and while it is great to learn how to sell a movie script, there is a caveat to all of this – a lot of these positions are unpaid, and this is what prevents people from being able to take them in the first place, as the cities that they tend to be offered in are expensive to live in.
That is an extremely precarious tightrope to try to walk, and to be honest; there is no particularly easy way to do it. This is a hard, hard thing to do, and if you are really interested in pursuing this option, your author would highly recommend that you pursue further and more in-depth research regarding this topic and how to balance the issue of opportunity vs. cost of living. The great thing is that if you demonstrate that you are willing to work hard at one of these offices, those internship positions often turn into full-time work, so it’s just a matter of riding out the storm more often than not, and again, it is a great way to learn how to sell a movie script.
