University of Rio Grande
Starting with the 10 acres of land donated by Permelia Artwood way back in 1873, the university campus has grown considerably with active community supports and local assistances. Madog Center for Welsh Studies in 1996 and Meigs Center in Middleport in 1998 is a couple of examples of campus expansion with popular support.
Housing over two thousand students, the university has a history of significant accomplishments during its century long existence. In sharp contrast to its initial characteristic of local college in 1876, the institution has now turned global in true sense… Affiliation with the Baptists formally ended in early 1950s when it was bought by Bob Evans and in the same year Bevo Francis put it on the world map with a legendary basketball feat of scoring 113 points in a single match, a NCAA record till date.
North Central Association of Colleges and Schools approved Rio Grande with accreditation in 1969. One of the major contributors to the accreditation was the Davis Library of the institute.
A host of courses and majors are offered by the university that has earned a big reputation for the educational patterns and the nursing programs it conducts. Another unique feature is the teacher education program structured around the theory of Multiple Intelligences of Howard Gardener. Interactive media, graphic design, diagnostic medical sonography, respiratory therapy, and radiologic technologies are some of the addition to the courses offered. On line degrees are offered to students who have enrolled for distant education.
Changes in 21 st Century
Transition from general curriculum to semester system was affected in 2001. The university introduced cyberspace options for learning and distance learning using the Internet for online education.
