seo, Search Engine Optimisation, is the process and activities through which we can make it easier for Search Engines to list and then send traffic to our web sites. These are split into on-site and off-site seo, and in this article we’ll be concentrating on what we can do on-site, within a WordPress blog, to maximise traffic.
Why WordPress? It”s insanely popular, easy to customise, and the Search Engines love it because every post is latently Search Engine Optimised. This is why WordPress blogs consistently rank higher than similar sites under the same keywords.
As good as WordPress is, there are ways to make it better, and easier to get listed. This is done mostly through plugins. They’re very easy to find and install from within WordPress admin – under the plugins tab. Installation instructions are beyond the scope of this article, but if you get stuck then help is easy to find. Just Google ‘how to install word press plugin’.
‘Google XML Sitemaps v3 for qTranslate’ – This is powerful. Most people don’t even know what a sitemap is, not to mention create one regularly or submit them. Why should you? It’s difficult enough to come up with fresh content. A sitemap is a map that tells the Search Engines exactly where all your content is, so they can find everything. This plugin automatically generates a new sitemap every time you add content, and submits this to Google, Yahoo, Bing and Ask,
‘Next Scripts Social Networks Auto-Poster’ – Automatically posts your new content to your Facebook, Twitter and Google+ accounts. It’s one of the few plugins that is able to post to a Facebook Business Page. The Google+ module is not free, so I generally don’t use this. Facebook and Twitter generate massive amounts of traffic, and a backlink from each of these to your new post is very valuable.
‘WordPress Ping Optimizer’ – WordPress automatically sends out a ping, a small message that basically says ‘I’ve just added content to my site, check this out’ every time content is added. This is wonderful, but the process could be a lot more efficient. This plugin greatly improves on the built in ping system, making it more viable for commercial sites. The improvements are too numerous to list here, but trust me – you need this.
The last tool is more a habit than a tool. Always be conscious of what your primary keywords are, and create your content in such a way as to promote your keywords and kayphrases in every post. It’s easy once you get in the habit, and this will make the jobs of all these tools much more productive and help you earn money online.
seo is not quick, but if done properly it will bring sustained traffic to your site for months or even years to come, so spend a little time learning the ropes.
