The Audi RS 5 sports coupe is the pinnacle of the A5 model range from the German automaker. The standard A5 has been a great success since it was first unveiled years ago due to its sleek and sexy shape that incorporates a curvaceous body style with a modern design with LED lighting throughout. Due to the car’s success, Audi has unveiled a number of performance variants including the S5 and then the RS 5, the latter being the most powerful and performance-oriented of the entire lineup. After the second-generation of the A5 model lineup was unveiled, the German car tuning specialists at ABT Sportsline created a new race car program that makes the sports car a track-day superstar. The new RS5-R model from ABT Sportsline includes special carbon fiber aerodynamic body work, lightweight forged wheels, engine modifications, and a race-oriented interior layout.
The high-revving 4.2-liter V-8 FSI engine that powers the factory Audi RS 5 was the first aspect that was addressed by ABT Sportsline engineers in the RS5-R. The engine was given a few minor tweaks that helped push the stock 420 horsepower output higher. Engineers installed a new ABT Power tune along with a special stainless steel exhaust system that exits on each side of the car before the rear forged wheels instead of the traditional bumper mounting. The result is a healthy 470 horsepower to help reduce the 0-100 km/h acceleration time down to 4.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 303 km/h.
With a higher output under the hood, ABT Sportsline went on to develop an aerodynamically-optimized lightweight carbon fiber body kit that would help make the RS5-R more composed on the race track. The new kit includes a new front bumper with side flics and splitter to generate downforce, and a new ventilated hood to cool the engine. New side skirts and door panels help to calm airflow along each side between the forged wheels and reduce weight over the stock components. A large rear spoiler wing and bumper diffuser add-on helps to increase downforce dramatically at the rear for better handling, braking, and stability at high speeds.
ABT Sportsline then upgraded the chassis with new suspension and rim options. The factory suspension was upgraded with a new coilover setup that can be custom-tailored for a given track. The factory rim and tire setup was replaced with new lightweight aluminum forged wheels in a 9.5 x 19 fitment at the front and rear with high-performance Michelin Pilot Sport tires for added grip.
Inside, ABT Sportsline installed a variety of safety and race modifications. The front seats were replaced with new bucket seats for better side bolstering and outfitted with four-point race harnesses for safety. A fire extinguisher and integrated roll cage help to protect the driver and passenger in the event of a crash.
