Window Blinds May Be Insulative and Vertical
It is interesting to know that vertical blinds from fabric help insulate homes. The fabric coverings on the slats quiet noise, and help insulate rooms from drafty window air. In winter, fabric holds heat better than smooth surface window blinds, and helps create a barrier to air flow. Heat stays in the room and cold air around windows is trapped between the glass and the blinds. In summer, fabric blinds help darken rooms and keep heat out of rooms in a similar manner.
Using fabric covered vertical blinds throughout the home reduces energy bills, for electric and heating and air conditioning. As energy rates rise, homeowners look for ways to reduce consumption. Windows can be used for energy production in winter if you open the blinds to allow the direct sun rays, passive solar heat energy, to enter the room. But when the sun goes down, it is time to close your winter blinds to keep cool air near the windows instead of letting it draft into the room. Fabric vertical blinds work very well for this purpose. You can open them all the way, exposing the entire window in the daytime, and later close them and use either the adjustments for slats or close them completely for maximum insulation.
Fabric covered vertical blinds offer more insulating effects than smooth vinyl or wood window blinds. You can get them custom made with fabrics of your choice, or select ready to hang window blinds at your favorite blind store. You may have less ability to cut to different lengths than with vinyl blinds, however, but most blinds come in normal window sizes. Using custom fabric allows you to coordinate pillows, curtains, or upholstered furniture to your blinds.
In older homes, fabric covered vertical blinds help insulate old windows that may be a little drafty, or not as tightly sealed as modern windows. Many old homes have tall windows, and using vertical blinds can add a modern look to them. Large picture windows may not extend to the floor, but you can still use tall vertical blinds to make the room seem larger, and cover the wide window area handsomely. Since old homes usually have taller ceiling heights than modern homes, the vertical blinds can bring balance to the room because of their width.
Every vertical blind comes with a matching valance that covers the pull mechanism system and the tops of the slats and their hangers. The blinds operate smoothly, pulling to either left or right, or opening in the center to outsides. Mount the blinds outside the window frame so you have more window exposure available. Slats will stack on the outside of one side of the window, or on both sides with the center opening style.
Use light colored vertical blinds for rooms where darkening is not needed; use darker colors and fabrics for bedrooms, media rooms, or any room where darkness is desirable. The fabrics can vary in weight and thickness, so that allows you more decorating and insulating options from which to choose.
Cleaning is not usually an issue, because dust does not cling to vertical blinds as it does with horizontal surfaces. light vacuuming should be all that is necessary with fabric covered vertical blinds from time to time. You might want to order a few extra slats when you custom order fabric covered blinds in case there is a stain or dirt you cannot remove, so you can replace them. If there is a problem over time, and you do decide to replace them, fabric vertical blinds are a little more expensive than the vinyl coated slats or wood slat blinds, but the benefits outweigh the expense.
