Until recently I have always favoured the free Blogger program provided by Google at blogspot.com over other methods of blogging. Why? Because it is so easy to set up and use, and monetize. However, Blogger has it’s limitations. The most signifcant of which is that you don’t own your blog so you cannot sell it if you want to. And you may want to sell it at some point if it becomes valuable because of the amount of income it is generating. It is possible to register your own domain name and host a Blogger blog on this domain but I found this technically more complex to set up.
I have always been reluctant to take the journey into WordPress blogging because earlier versions seemed so confusing especially when it came to attempting changes to the setup. It is possible to set up a free blog at wordpress.com but, as best I can recall, there are limits on using the blog for advertising and therefore a limit on what you can earn with it. All the blog aficionados recommend using WordPress installed on your own domain and now I am beginning to see why.
Contrary to what I imagined, I now find it is quite easy to install WordPress on a registered domain. One of the challenges seems to be to find a suitable theme for the blog, one which is appealing without the colours and design being dominating. The less dominating the design the more likely your blog visitors will see your advertising, assuming you are using your blog to generate some extra cash or even a full time income. By suitable I also mean a theme which is well optimized for the search engines and which permits easy and optimal inclusion of advertising such as AdSense in the posts.
But what has finally convinced me to use WordPress with my domains is the ready availability of free plugins. Plugins are small software programs which can be easily added to the blogging software to increase the options available. I especially favour a free plugin called Quick-Adsense which makes embedding a range of different forms of advertising anywhere in any post a simple matter. There are also a whole host of paid plugins which can enable such things as auto inclusion of articles, and Amazon and Clickbank advertising.
