When I first started selling on eBay, I listed items around my home that I no longer needed. I’m a big fan of donating gently used clothing, shoes, and household items, but once selling on eBay, I realized how much money I had been giving away. I’m still a big fan of donating but not until I check the sold listings on eBay to make sure I’m not handing them a handful of money.
Eventually, I ran out of items to sell, that’s when I started going to yard sales to find inventory. I grew up going to yard sales. I absolutely love the hunt to find a treasure for just a few bucks. Once I started selling on eBay, I saw them in a totally different light. I was amazed at how many sellers had no idea of their item’s value, and they were selling it for just a few dollars.
One morning, my daughter and I were on our way home from a long morning of yard sale hopping. I had gotten a few items, but it wasn’t the best haul and I was a little disappointed. We pulled into our neighborhood and I saw a neon green sign at the end of the street. By the way, neon green and pink poster board is the best invention! All I have to do is look for these bright colors when out yard sale hopping, and I can easily identify my next turn. So, we drove to our neighbor’s house and started browsing the items for sale.
As I looked through the piles of stuff, I noticed some clothing hanging from a rack at the end of the table. I thumbed through the clothes hangers and came across a jean jacket. As I checked it over for stains and defects, I realized it was a 100th Anniversary Edition Harley-Davidson jeans jacket. Whaaaat? As a bike enthusiast, I don’t understand why she even had it for sale. Even more surprising, she only wanted $3 for it. I was so excited to get back to the car and check the sold listings on eBay. I was sure I could get at least $40, but when I did my research, I found this particular jacket was being sold for $75 to $150 depending on the style.
I listed the jacket on eBay for $100 and it sold in just a few days. I was hooked! I knew this was something I could make a lot of money doing and eventually, replace my full-time income. I continued to sell on eBay. Every Saturday morning, I was up and out by 6:30, so I could be the first at those yard sales. The saying “the early bird, gets the worm” is very true.
Of course, not all sales are so lucrative. You have your bread and butter items which, for me, the average sale is around $25. I still get super excited when I get those big sales. I’ve sold shoes for $50 to $75 that cost me only $5, I sold a toy Star Wars light saber for $65 that cost $3, and I once sold a tie for $79 that was just $2. In addition to making a nice income, this excitement definitely keeps you motivated!
