seo Writing Tips – Keyword Density and Stuffing

When writing web content for seo save the stuffing for the turkey.

Keyword density is an important signal to search engines to determine what your content is about, and how well it matches the searcher’s intent.

Starting with keyword research is always a good first step in the writing process.

Use a keyword analysis tool to find the phrases with the highest search volume and lowest competition. Look for “long-tail” search phrases that match the way people type and/or speak.

The primary search word or phrase should be repeated in your content, but too much can be a bad thing and get you flagged as a keyword stuffer.

Density over 5% is considered stuffing and should be avoided.

In this article, the density of the word “keyword” is 4.3%. But don’t forget to actually read the content too. If it sounds repetitive when you read the copy out loud, then it probably is.

How do you know the density? Measure it. Use a density checker that lets you paste text, check the density, and make edits until you get it just right.

seo Writing Tip – Stemming Keywords

To achieve the desired density while avoiding repetition, stem off the original keyword with some variations. For example, an article or content about a (something) review might include reviews, reviewer, reviewed, and reviewing. Google will still make a broad match against the search term “review”, but it will read more naturally.

Location and Keywords for seo

But just like in real estate, location is also important. This is where you can increase your keyword density strategically and avoid repetitive-sounding copy.

  • Obviously, make sure the exact keyword appears in the page title and the URL – and keep it short to match better with search queries
  • Use the keyword in the image title and ALT tag
  • Use the keyword in headings <h1>, <h2>
  • Place the keyword at the top of the content, at the beginning of the sentence, and put it in bold

Build Inbound Links with Keyword in Anchor Text

Once you post your optimized content to the web the fun begins. Now you can build links to your content from your other related blogs, Blogspot, Google+, blog directories, and other social sites. Even if the links are nofollow, they can still drive traffic and send signals in the right way based on the anchor text.

Instead of linking with just your URL, or something like “read more about good anchor text for seo here”, use the keyword in the anchor text, and surround it with other relevant words. For example, read this article about seo/”>Anchor Text and Linking Tips for seo. Ah hah! See what I did there?
