In today’s world your business just can’t do without a website. Your site tells the world all they need to know about your business and how they can do business with you. If people want to find a business like yours they will search Google instead of using the phone book or the Yellow Pages. And if they can’t find your website, your company doesn’t exist, it’s that simple!
For that reason you need reliable webhosting, no one seems to talk much about web site hosting. Especially if you do your business online or when you have a location independent business, it’s one of your most critical assets. The first thing you need is webhosting by a reliable hosting company, because if your website goes down, your business goes down! A good hosting company should provide your site with an optimal uptime, usually 99,99%.
Here are some things to consider when choosing a hosting company:
- Reliability (See above)
- Excellent support (to help you get everything working correctly)
- Inexpensive (We don’t want to pay more then necessary)
- Good statistics (Shows what’s going on on your site)
- Simple control panel (for setting everything up your account and site adjustments)
- Easy application installation (WordPress or other free programs set up for you with NO PROGRAMMING KNOWLEDGE!)
You will need to find a hosting company’s that delivers all of the above and adds more professional options you may need in future:
Look for these features:
- Unlimited Domain Hosting
- Unlimited GB Hosting Space
- Unlimited GB File Transfer
- Unlimited E-mail Accounts
- Free Domain
- Free Site Builder w/ templates
- Secure Shell, SSL, FTP, Stats
- CGI, Ruby (RoR), Perl, PHP, MySQL
- 99.9% Network Uptime Guarantee
Because of my technical background it’s good to know you can tweak the settings, but this isn’t required to setup your website.
TIP: Register your domain with a hosting company or make sure someone registers it to your name!
It can save you a lot of worries, problems and money if you are the registered owner of your domain.
For example, a friend of mine used the free webhosting service offered by a well known company that also offers print services like business cards and t-shirts to register his domain and create a website. Sometime later his site became more popular and he needed to move to a professional hosting company that offered professional options. That wasn’t an option with the printing company, they only allowed you to leave if you paid a premium fee. There was no way out, because the printing company was the registered owner of the domain!
He had his lawyer look into the case, but it was watertight. To make a long story short, he chose to register another domain with a professional hosting company. This time he did register the domain to his own name! Be warned, it cost him a lot of traffic because he had to start all over again. Now I can hear you think… “what if I delete my account at the printing company and when the domain retention period is over, I’ll register the domain on my name?” Nope. They keep the name registered for several years after you leave, so no point waiting for that!
