Many of us have gone through the phase of using incandescent light bulbs. We all know that even though incandescent light bulbs emit huge quantity of light, it is not a very convenient source because incandescent light bulbs need to be replaced very often. Hence one needs to buy about a dozen each month. Another alternative preferred by many is fluorescent tube lights. People prefer this light source because they don’t need to be replaced very often but they come with their own set of disadvantages such as gradual dimming is noticed with the passage of time. Florescent lights are also considered to be a threat to environmental health because they contain traces of heavy metal such as mercury and poisonous phosphates, these materials can be dangerous to the health of animals and plants. Incandescent light bulbs and fluorescent tube lights are filament based light sources. Filament based light sources consume a huge quantity of electrical energy out of which most of the energy is dissipated as heat. Filament based light sources are also bad at bearing electrical shocks and physical shocks as well.
Majority of aforementioned problems can be avoided with the use of light sources that use LEDs as fundamental light emitting unit. Light-Emitting-Diodes are small bulbs; light energy is released when electrons vibrate at a certain frequency, hence LEDs do not use filament. A small LED bulb ranges in size from 3mm to 8mm across, thus it emits significant amount of light but not enough that proves to be very useful. Therefore many LEDs are placed on a panel and collectively adequate light is emitted. The panel can be shaped according to need but there are some popular designs which have gotten a specific name such as LED Bars, LED Tubes, LED Flex and LED Modules.
LED Modules are mainly round in shape and come in various sizes. LED Modules usually use aluminum as a holder that holds the panel. Aluminum is preferred because it is cheaper, and it has reflective surface therefore light can easily be reflected out of the module. The panel in LED Module can contain up to a hundred LEDs.
Beside round shape, led modules can also be bought in other different shapes. Shape and size are variable factors but color of light is another important factor that many people ponder upon before buying. LEDs are also available in Red, Green and Blue colors. These are three primary colors and they can be mixed in variable intensities to create other different colors as well. Owing to different colors of LEDs one can find various LED Modules which either emit monochromatic light or can emit a mixture of different colors at different times. One can also find modules in which the LEDs of different colors are fixed forming design patterns. There are modules which flash as well. Such colorful and flashing variants are mostly prefer by different businesses such as clubs and marriage halls.
