Having the right model locomotive will make all the difference in your model train world!
Do you ever have to push start your locomotive to get it going? Or have to pick it up after it derails off the tracks because it picked up speed to quickly?
This doesn’t have to happen to you. Learn model trains how to tips, and choose the right model locomotive so you can prevent the most common beginner mistakes with your model train set.
When putting together your train set, having a quality locomotive is important. Don’t try to save a few bucks only to end up in frustration land!
You see a locomotive picks up the electricity through the track via it’s wheels. The electricity is then transferred to the motor, which powers the gears and causes the train move.
The problem with the cheaper models is either the wheels have poor pickup, or the gear set doesn’t work well. When it comes to the engine which drives the train, be sure to purchase a good one! This is the most important piece you’ll buy.
So what do you need to look for when buying a locomotive?
* Powered Wheels….. avoid ones that only pick up electricity from 1 set of wheels. A smooth operating locomotive picks up power from multiple sets of wheels.
* Motor & Gear ratio…. an engine with a good motor and gear ratio will require less electricity to power the locomotive thus giving you a slow but smooth start.
* Flywheel….. Make sure the motor has a flywheel at both ends (or at least one end). You’ll enjoy smooth starts and smooth stops.
* Length….. avoid the longer ones. A shorter diesel locomotive will handle the curves much better than the longer ones.
* Weight….. The right weight makes a big difference as well. Too light and it won’t make good contact….. too heavy and it will operate sluggish.
So as you can see, It is important that you choose the right model locomotive, as it is crucial to the overall operation of your train set.
Before you purchase yours, take it for a test drive. The best hobby shops will be more than happy to let you take it for a spin.
Run it forward, backwards and make sure it has a smooth start and stop.
As with most hobbies, a model train set can get rather expensive. If you’re looking to get the most out of your dollars, I recommend going to your local hobby shop for a test drive and then making the purchase online. You’ll save up to 40%!
When it comes to the locomotive, be willing to invest a little more for quality. You will be glad you did.
These model trains how to tips are what the pros use! Apply them to your train set and you’ll be a pro too!
