How To Make Your Own Website
In this introductory article on how to make your own website I will give a brief explanation of the overall process of getting your website up and online and highlight some of the different methods available to you.
HTML – The Bare Bones
All websites are written in a simple programing language called html though to get your website online it’s not really necessary to have any knowledge of this at all. There are software programs available known as html editors which enable you to create your web page just as you would produce a text document or presentation by using a WYSIWYG editor (What You See Is What You Get). This gives you a graphical representation and allows you to easily create the web page as you would see it online. I will be explaining a little more about these and reviewing a couple of the more popular editing programs a little later
Web Hosting – Upload your Pages
Once you have written your webpages you then have to upload them to a web server where they can be accessed by anyone at anytime. Web hosting companies will rent you space on their web server for your pages and will associate your domain name (if you have one). The method used to upload your webpages to the server will most probably be by using a method known as FTP (file transfer protocol). Most of the popular html editing programs have built in FTP so that you can upload your newly created and edited html webpages files to your web server.
Domain Names
The domain name is the ‘yourcompany.com’ that people will type in to see your webpages. It is not strictly necessary to own a domain name as there are companies which offer you use of their own domains… for example yourisp.com/yourcompany/ where you can host your webpages. You pay an annual fee to a domain name company for use of your domain name. The domain name can be hosted on any server you wish and should be under your full control. It is not necessary to buy your domain name from the same company that offers you web hosting though they often offer good package deals including the domain name of your choice.
Web Templates
If you haven’t got time to design and format your own web page you can buy one of the many website templates available on the Internet. The template is just the basic outlay of your pages including a common navigation menu, header and footer so all you need to do, once set up is to fill in the content for each page. Templates come in a few different formats and are usually labeled as to which editing program they are compatible for. One popular format is in the Photoshop .psd format. These are image files on layers where you will be able to separate each part of the image and insert it into your html page.
HTML Editing Software
There are a lot of html editors available but there are a few which stand out and have become what one might loosely as industry standard. Adobe’s Dreamweaver is the great grand daddy of them all and is extremely complete. It is designed to manage multiple multi-paged web sites, allows easy use of templates and has a built in ftp function synchronizing the webpages on your computer with those on your web server. Dreamweaver is the choice of most professionals and is very complete. It is however a little confusing at first and has a fairly steep learning curve. There are a few books and video products available which really help flatten that steep learning curve and make it easy to build your own websites with little or no experience in a matter of hours. Another popular web editing program is Xsite pro. This has a very easy to use interface and has its proprietary template format. The software comes with hundreds of readymade templates which you can use as they are or as a starting point for your own customised version. You can also start from scratch and use your own design if you wish. The main feature of this editor however is its built in seo functions. seo stands for Search Engine Optimisation and the software includes an seo analyzer which will count occurrences of your keywords and give you reports on all of your pages as to how well they are optimised for the search engines. This is a very simple program to use but when it comes to completely customising your work as you need to stay within the confines of the format it can be a inflexible.
