HDMI Cables – How to Pick the Right Cables for Your Setup

Many of us get caught up in the excitement of buying a new awesome high def flat panel TV or high end projection system that we forget to think about the one thing that makes it all work… CABLES! HDMI technology is becoming more and more popular on every entertainment device we buy. The hardest part isn’t always buying the right equipment but instead buying the right HDMI cable to tie it all together. Well I am here to help.

Lets start with a basic set up. Many people including myself have a simple set up in their home. You may have an LCD TV with a basic Receiver and maybe a Blu-ray player and they are most likely in close proximity to one another. For the close basic set ups you can get away with using fairly basic cable. A value series type cable or a medium grade series will be perfect for you. These cables are flexible enough to accommodate stacked or close pieces of equipment and also provide enough shielding to keep out EMI (electromagnetic interference) and RFI (radio frequency interference) from other cables or devices. The shorter the cable you can get away with using the better. Don’t let anyone trick you into buying a cable that does not fit your needs!!!

Now on to you high end pro users that have more money than you know what to do with. You are wanting to do it all right? Control system, 7.1 in wall surround sound, 1080p projector tossing a beautiful image onto a 100 inch screen. Well you are most likely going to want to go with a more high end cable for 1). Match the rest of your equipment and 2). to make sure that all of your high end components work at peak performance. Now as opposed to the basic system your system may require cables to be run in wall from your closet equipment rack out to your projector or surround sound system. In this case you will need HDMI cables that have an in wall rating or otherwise known as CL2 or CL3 rating.

For HDMI cables that are connecting the components in your equipment rack you can use any type of cable really. It is all at your discretion. Most of the cables will be shorter in nature due to the tight bends from component to component so again make sure you seek out flexible HDMI cables. I would also recommend the Rapid Run system created by Cables to go for in wall installation. This is a 3 part break aways system that will save you a lot of time and hassle running cables in wall.

I hope this info was somewhat insightful and will help you make the right decision in choosing the correct HDMI for you and your home entertainment system.
