One of the most important aspects of home and workplace safety is lighting. Having good lighting is absolutely essential to making sure people are safe. The power can go out any time, whether at home or at work, and during these times, you need to have backup options. Many workplaces will have backup generators, especially if they are in certain industries where lighting is a matter of life and death, such as in hospitals or manufacturing plants. For the rest of us though, emergency lighting consists mainly of having portable flashlights. Here’s an overview of what’s available in portable flashlights for home or business emergency lighting.
Rechargeable
Many lights are now available in rechargeable options. They can be LED lights which are small and can be plugged in by USB cable or DC cable into an outlet or even your computer. Or they can include large lithium ion batteries which can be charged many times. They come in very small or large options which include a handle and even some emergency accessories like a radio and other emergency tools.
Battery Powered
For many homes and businesses, battery powered will be the way to go. Batteries are easy to find, easy to install and last a long time. They are also cheap if bought in bulk. Battery powered lights are also generally lightweight so they come in a variety of sizes, from tiny LED lights powered by small watch batteries to slightly larger handheld lights powered by triple-A batteries to large commercial grade flashlights powered by larger batteries like C and D batteries. Some flashlights can be powered by 1 or 2 batteries, while others can be powered by 4, 6 or even 8 batteries to offer an explosion of light.
Solar Powered
In recent years, solar powered lights have become not just more widely available but almost commonplace. With solar powered emergency lighting, there’s no need for the weight or expense of batteries, all you need to power the light is the light of the sun. Most solar powered lights have a solar panel or solar cells on the top or sides of the light, which you simply leave in the sun. Thought the disadvantage here is that if you run out of power at night, you are stuck. This is where the next option may come in handy.
Hand Cranked
Nowadays, you can buy lights powered by turning a crank on the side or top of the light. By simply turning the crank again and again for a few minutes, you’ll generally get a few minutes of light. This might be all that you need. The great advantage of hand cranked lights is that you don’t need batteries or the sun for them to work.
