Website Makers for Basic Pages
If you’d like to build a basic web presence for family photos, personal projects, or other non-commercial interests, you probably don’t need to figure out how to make your own website from scratch. After all, there’s no point in taking on a huge, difficult project when there are plenty of easy website makers available. Here’s a look at some of the most popular services that you can use to put together basic pages.
Weebly
This service provides the ability to create two basic websites on its free hosting at no extra charge. Additional features or more sites will cost you, however. The service provides a variety of templates and easy editing of fonts, photos and other page elements. Unlike many free website makers, Weebly allows you to use AdSense on your page, but requires 50 percent of any advertising money you receive.
Yola
This free site builder and host is actually targeted toward small businesses. It won’t create a complex site or provide a full-fledged web store, but it is a good option for business owners who want to create a simple presence online. It also works for non-commercial sites, too. Just remember that you can make only one site for free and that you’ll need to stick with Yola’s relatively limited set of templates.
Wix
This slightly more complex website maker requires a little bit of technical expertise. It also offers long URLs only, making it a little more difficult for users to remember you site address. On the plus side, Wix gives you a wide range of extra options, though you may find that many of these must be purchased. Not for new users, Wix offers the best range of features for more experienced designers who want free hosting and a no-charge site builder.
Google Sites
This page creation tool also uses fairly rigid templates, but it allows wikis and other interactive sites. It’s part of the Google Apps suite of productivity programs and permits shopping carts via the Google i-store gadget. It does allow custom domains, but these cost extra. Google sites also provides limited HTML customization of pages for users who know how to modify their own websites.
DoodleKit
This website maker asks for a minimum amount of information, then creates a placeholder website that you can modify relatively easily. It doesn’t offer much drag and drop functionality, but it makes up for it with the ability to add your own HTML code if you choose. You can also create a storefront via Google Checkout or PayPal, but other shopping carts can be difficult.
These popular website makers are an excellent choice if you want to know how to make your own website but don’t want to spend too much time or money. They won’t make high-end, complicated pages, but they will get you onto the web.
