Electric Car Conversion – How to Convert Your Car in 16 Steps

Slowly but surely, the electric car conversion is providing car owners an alternative solution to the problem of rising gasoline prices in the global market. Now, people have the option of converting their gasoline-powered cars into electric cars that will run on electrical power.

An electric car conversion is the process of replacing your internal combustion engines with electric motors. People may find it complicated to do at first. But once you get the hang of it, you’ll be converting all your cars in no time.

But before you do any converting, be sure that you know what you are doing. Here is a step by step guide on how to go about electric car conversion:

1) Carefully remove the engine, clutch, exhaust system, gas tank and radiator of the car you want to convert. Make sure that there is enough space available where you will be installing your electric motor.

2) Since the electric motor usually requires custom-mounting bracket, provide an adapter plate to the transmission where you can mount the motor.

3) Electric motors need a reduction gear for its efficiency to be maximized and the easiest way to create a good gear reduction is to pin the existing manual transmission into first of second gear.

4) After doing the first three steps, it is now time to mount the circuit controller. Look for space and fabricate brackets to hold all batteries in a safe position.

5) Install the batteries Sealed batteries have the advantage over the other types of batteries because they can be turned on their sides and can be easily fitted anywhere.

6) Wire the batteries and the electric motor to the circuit controller. Use no.00 gauge welding cable in doing so.

7) If the car you are converting is power steering, make sure to wire up and mount an electric motor for the power of the steering pump. For instances that you want your car to have air conditioning, you also need to wire up and mount another electric motor for the compressor of you’re A/C.

8) Install a small but sufficient electric water heater for heat and plumb it into the existing heater core.

9) For the power brakes, install a vacuum pump so that the brake booster will operate effectively.

10) Install a reliable charging system for your car. This is one thing that you can’t overlook. A faulty charging system can result to your batteries easily draining its electrical charge.

11) Install a Direct Current to Direct Current converter to be able to power the accessory battery that you’ve installed.

12) You also have to install a volt meter on your car so that you can detect the state of charge in the battery pack. The volt meter is the equivalent of the gas gauge in a gasoline-powered vehicle. It will tell you when it’s time to recharge your batteries.

13) Potentiometers also need to be installed. You do so by hooking them to the accelerator pedal before you connect them to the circuit controller.

14) You need provide a simple switch that you will wire to the circuit controller that will send a reverse signal to the transmission so that the car will shift into the reverse gear.

15) Install a contactor that can connect and disconnect the battery to and from the controller. The contactor which is actually a large relay is what turns the can “on” and “off”. The relay should be able to carry a load of more than a hundred amps and can break 96 to 300 volts of Direct Current without holding an arc.

16) Lastly, rewire the ignition switch to be able to turn on all the new equipment that you’ve just installed, specifically the contactor. Once everything is tested, your new electric car is ready to go!

This is just a quick overview of what to expect when you finally decide to convert your car. There are a more things that you need to learn. So, go buy a copy of your own guide to electric car conversion on line now.
