Photovoltaic Cells – How Do Photovoltaic Solar Panels Work?

By now you would have heard about photovoltaic solar panels. This is the element in a solar panel which generates electricity. This is based on a particular phenomenon whereby electrons are agitated by the suns rays. The phenomenon is known as the photovoltaic effect. In this phenomenon some materials tend to produce certain amount of electric currents when they get exposed to some light. The source used for this purpose is usually sunlight.

The process was developed and discovered by a scientist Edmund Becquerel. This was in the year 1839. The photovoltaic solar panels include a series of PN junctions that are semiconductors by nature. These junctions have two parts. One part is deficient in electrons and the other part is rich in electrons. There is a photovoltaic cell present in your DIY solar panel. This cell is designed in such a way that it creates an electric field.

The electric field is created across the present junction that is between the two parts of the crystal. At this point of time the electrons present in the cell moves from the electron rich part to the electron deficient part. The two sides of the crystal are known as the p type and the n type. There is a barrier between these two sides. This barrier prevents more electrons from moving across the two sides of the crystal.

This barrier works until the sunlight affects the solar cell and produces more electrons. These electrons created with the help of sunlight are filled with lots of energy and they are capable of breaking the barrier between the junctions. After this the electrons again start passing across the junctions. This is the process through which the photovoltaic solar panels work.

The photovoltaic solar panels can easily become your solar power generator. You can use solar energy for various purposes. You might have learned a lot about solar energy and its uses in high school. This used to be an important chapter in physics. This is why almost all of us know about building solar panels. The sunlight actually contains photons.

These photons are usually filled with energy. This energy actually hit the solar cells and then they get absorbed. There are various uses of the solar panels. You can even reduce your electricity bill with the help of these solar panels. You either need to purchase a solar panel for yourself or you can even build them at home.

You can even use the system to charge batteries and even for powering the motor. All these things become easy with the photovoltaic solar panels. These panels might look very simple but they are usually a little complex when they are operated.
