Linux Commands Training – Help Files in Usr-Share-Man – System Administration Training

The /usr/share/man Directory Path

The man directory is the parent directory for several subdirectories that contain Linux “manaul pages”, which are actually files that provide on-screen help documentation regarding the Linux OS.

Linux Commands Training Tips: The Linux System Administration commands and system directory info covered here apply to ALL Linux distributions, including: Ubuntu, Edubuntu, Kubuntu, Slackware, Debian, SUSE, openSUSE, Red Hat – and Fedora.

When you install Linux, several thousand of these files are installed below the /usr/share/man directory path!

There are pages for many topics, including system software components, commands and configuration files.

The number of page (files) installed is dependent on the number of software packages. When you install some software packages, these man page files are also installed with the package and most Linux packages include one or more of these files.

Using the Linux man (Help) Command – Example

The man command can be run from any directory and is used to display a help “page” file.

These are somewhat useful (once you know how to work with Linux), but they are often cryptic and almost never show any examples of running commands!

In man pages, Linux command options are shown in alphabetical order, rather than importance. And there are sometimes over 50 options you have to scan through to get to the one you need!

Now run this command to see the manual “page” and get help on the users command.

$ man users

You can type a / and then some text and press Enter to search for text and then press “n” (without the quotes) to go to the next.

You press “q” to exit out of a man page.

Now use the man command to view help information about the following commands: mkdir, less and cp.
