LED Plant Lights – Worth the Price or Not?

Light is one of the important factors in the growth of plants, and choosing the right source is particularly important for those who are growing plants indoors. In order for plants to grow fast and healthy, they should receive the right kind of light and the right amount of light. There are various sources of artificial plant light, including the LED plant lights.

Two of the most common plant lights are the incandescent light bulbs and the fluorescent lamps. Many indoor growers of plants use them because for one, they are cheap. However, the long-term cost, just like the incandescent light bulbs can be expensive as they consume too much electricity. LED plant lights, on the other hand, can be expensive compared to other plant lights, but many plant growers can attest that the price is worth it.

LED stands for light-emitting diode. One of the advantages of using LED plant bulbs is that they do not consume as much energy as other plant lights do. One of the reasons is that they emit only two main color wavelengths, which are blue light and red light. The combination of the two lights is ideal for many plant growers. While blue light encourages the growth of plants, red light encourages the blooming of plants. Thus, the blue is beneficial in the early stages of growing plants, and the red is useful in the later stages. Not only using LED as plant bulbs is energy-saving, it is effective to the fast and healthy growth of plants as well.

It has been found out that the use of LED helps decrease electricity for up to 70%. Another reason that these lights are energy-saving is that they are produced with built-in fans as well as heat removal systems. This means that no other accessories are needed such as fans and cooling systems. Moreover, because LED light for plants does not produce as much light as an incandescent light does, it does not pose danger to getting oneself burnt or setting fire.

In addition, LED plant lights can last for up to more than 50,000 hours. Plant growers do not also have to worry about maintenance as they do not require changing of ballasts, unlike fluorescent lamps. It is important to note that other plant lights can work for only 5,000 hours, hence, they require changing from time to time.

The use of LED as a source of artificial light for plants is not as common as fluorescent lamps and incandescent lamps, so it is not surprising if many plant growers are still hesitant to use it. And, it is more expensive to boot. However, indoor plant growers must consider the long term advantages of LED plant lights in order for them to realize that they are worth the price. The decreased electricity bill and the lifespan of the lights alone will make them realize that they have earned more than what they have paid for. More importantly, they also get to help save the environment.
