Google Panda, in a Nutshell

Google Panda, in a Nutshell

Google Panda, in a Nutshell

Google Panda, launched in February 2011, is a relatively new development by the company to improve search results ranking algorithm. It is named after the engineer, Navneet Panda. Its aim is to show higher-quality websites on top of search results and keep ‘thin sites’ or low-quality websites on lower ranking. It’s a filtration to show only good-quality content on top to improve Google search credibility more than any other search engine. According to a report, social networking sites and newly released websites have higher ranking in Google than those having lots of ads. Through this change, about 12 percent of all search results ranking is affected. After Panda rollout, Google’s webmaster forum, and many other websites were filled with complaints of copyright infringers and scrapers getting a better ranking than those sites having original content. To combat this serious issue, Google tried detecting infringers better by publicly asking for data point.

Improvement in Panda

Since its inception in February 2011, Google’s Panda went through many updates, and this happened on a global scale after about two months in April. An advisory was published on Google’s blog that gave directions about self-evaluation of website’s quality. It was thus aimed to help affected publishers solve the problem of ranking. The blog post had a list of 23 bullet points giving satisfactory answers to “What counts as a high-quality site?” It was mainly focused to assist webmasters.

How does Panda work

Google Panda is created through an algorithm update, which uses artificial intelligence in a more measurable and sophisticated manner than it was in the past. With the help of quality human testers, thousands of websites were rated on the basis of their quality, including speed, design, and reliability. With Google’s updated Panda, machine-learning algorithm was used to see similar aspects of various high-quality as well as low-quality sites. It resulted in depreciated importance of PageRank, the old ranking factor. Today, several new ranking factors are introduced to Google. Panda is updated frequently and Google runs algorithm regularly.

Google Penguin

Google Penguin update was introduced on 24th April, 2012. It affected an additional 3.1 % of all search queries carried out in English Language, which further made it prominent that search rankings are highly volatile. On 18th September 2012, Google confirmed the latest version of Panda in its official Twitter page.

How Panda differs from other algorithms

Google Panda affects ranking of the entire site or a particular segment rather than a website’s individual pages only. This is a significant difference in previous algorithms and Panda. Thus, it has brought an improvement in the way sites are indexed by Google search.

Strict rules by Google

In March this year, Google Panda got updated, and the company stated that it’s going to be deploying a penalty for over-optimization to fairly manage high competition on the web. So, beware all web masters.
