Dimmer Lights and Switches – The Light Dimmer & How it Works

Dimmer switches are a great way to control the lighting within your home or office space and fortunately, they aren’t difficult or costly to install. Dimmer lights are great for creating moods within a room. For example, you may have the lights switched to full for a dinner party, but when the food’s away lower them for a more atmospheric look and feel. This can work for a number of everyday situations, which is why dimmers have become so popular over time.

A typical dimmer switch will have a lever or knob, which the user can move up or down to create the desired lighting effect. This control will allow you to have your lights anywhere from fully lit to switched off. Many modern dimmers also come with a remote control.

How do light dimmers work?

Traditional dimmers work in a way that the energy is diverted into a resistor when the lights are dimmed. While this still achieves the desired effect, it still means that owners are paying for a fully lit bulb, even if it is dimmed most of the time.

Modern dimmers are much more energy efficient. Instead of sending energy to a resistor, the light circuit will be switched off and on, thus reducing the flow of energy.

Is it easy to install a dimmer switch?

If you consider yourself quite handy around the house installing a dimmer switch will not be hard work. However, it is always recommended that you use an electrician if you’re not confident working with electricity. There are many ‘how to’ guides that can be found online, but it’s best to get advice from a professional as electric work can be very dangerous if handled incorrectly.
