Coal Gasification System – The Cleanest Way to Generate Electricity From Coal

In today’s world, there is huge need for power to continue the growth of a nation. With the reducing supplies of natural resources, the future looks bleak. To overcome this issue, coal gasification system turns out to be a solution to most of the problems in power generation sector. This is a kind of future technology to meet our demand for electricity.

Gasification is considered as 100% environment friendly and promotes a greener and cleaner environment. Moreover, it tends to increase coal power plant efficiency from 40% to 70%.

In coal gasification system, coal molecules are broken apart and then reconstituted to our liking. The hazardous gases are separated and removed and most of the sulfur and nitrogen are collected. The required fuel gases are then sent to be burned.

Coal gasification system offers the most versatile and cleanest way to generate electricity from coal. The good news is that the first coal gasification power plant is now operating commercially in the United States.

The fist step is the gasification process is the breaking of coal molecule to get its individual elements. The molecule bonds are broken apart by using high temperatures. This process is carried out in a low-oxygen environment so that the elements will combine in the way we want. After this, elements are reconstituted as per the requirement. There are two major categories of molecules created: slag and gas phase molecules. Slag is ash which has been fused by the high temperatures and sold to the construction company. It is often used in concrete and pavement.

Most molecules in the gasification system include carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, elemental hydrogen, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, sulfuric acid, and methane. Each of these extracted molecules are processed and sold to various companies for further applications. Almost 99% of sulfur can be easily removed from coal in this way. It leads to carbon dioxide and hydrogen in gaseous phase. This gas is popularly known as synthetic gas or syngas. The important point to note here is that fuel is relatively pure with up to 99% impurities removed at this stage.

Now comes burning. The energy released from the burning is used to generate electricity. All the leftover gases are sent onward. Depending on the need for electricity, the gasification system can use two turbines and generate more electricity to meet the demand. This system is known as the dual-turbine system, or the integrated gasification combined-cycle system (IGCC).
