Choosing Outdoor Lighting For Safety Outside Your Home

One of the most annoying things about winter is that our daylight hours are greatly reduced – often, when we get home from work, our homes are bathed in darkness. Without adequate lighting, you may find yourself tripping up the stairs to your front door or see your guests struggling to navigate the obstacles scattered on your driveway and lawns. Through the clever installation of some outdoor lighting, however, you can go a long way towards preventing injuries around your home.

So, what sort of lighting should you choose if you want to increase the safety of your property at night?

  • Security: many homeowners prefer to install security fixtures to the outside of their homes because they function in two ways – the first is that they add to the security of your home by deterring would be thieves, and the second is that they create quite a large dome of light with which to see by.
  • Sensor: homeowners also commonly install these fixtures on the outside of their homes, particularly around the entrances and garages, as they switch on when they detect movement. This is beneficial, as the lights aren’t on all night but will be ready to go when you need them.
  • Flood: these fixtures resemble security lighting in the way that they are very bright and can fill a large area with quite a substantial amount of illumination. These fixtures differ, however, in the fact that flood lights tend to have a more artificial appearing glow.
  • Wall: many homeowners like to mount outdoor lighting on the walls of their front porches, patios and decking areas, as they are attractive features that also provide a substantial amount of illumination.
  • Solar: there are many benefits associated with solar lighting, the main one being that they are very cheap to run (especially if they have been fitted with their own individual solar panels). They will switch on as dusk falls and turn themselves off as the sun rises.
  • Fairy: whilst fairy lights are not often used for safety in outdoor lighting, many homeowners have found that they provide adequate illumination for quickly ducking outside (perhaps to look for a pet or to farewell guests).

Whilst outdoor lighting is beneficial for entertaining outside your home at night, they are also highly useful for creating a safe atmosphere around your home. The last thing you want to deal with after getting home from a hard day at work is a twisted ankle sustained by tripping up the front steps or a skinned knee caused by the various obstacles in your driveway. With the clever selection of your outdoor lighting, you can kill two birds with one stone – increase the security or usability of your home, too.
